BENTELER and thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg agree on supply of green steel

Harald Weber, Spokesperson

Paderborn/Hagen, April 11, 2023. BENTELER Steel/Tube and thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg have made a joint commitment to sustainability and climate protection. The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding for the supply of CO2-reduced semi-finished steel slabs from the BENTELER electric steel mill in Lingen to thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg. The agreement provides for a continuous increase in volume of the material produced with green electricity until 2027.

"Through our sustainable commitment, we are striving to reconcile climate protection and economic efficiency better. At the same time, we are supporting our customers in achieving their own climate targets," says Ralph Mathis, Chief Sales Officer (CSO) at BENTELER Steel/Tube, about the path the two companies are taking.

"We are pleased to have BENTELER as a partner who fully supports our decarbonization strategy by supplying CO2-reduced slabs," says Jens Schöllnershans, Head of Procurement & Supply Management at thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg. Dr. Henner Diederichs, Head of Sales, adds: "Another milestone on the way to green steel – for our customers and climate protection."

BENTELER's Green Tubes Strategy

As part of its Green Tubes strategy, the BENTELER Steel/Tube Division has set itself the goal of being CO2 neutral by 2045. The company's electric steel mill in Lingen is the core element in achieving this goal. In the steel mill, steel scrap is recycled with the help of an electric arc furnace, thus starting a new life cycle. The steel produced there can be cast as billets or slabs. Billets are used by BENTELER to produce tubes in its own tube plants; slabs can be used as the primary material for coil steel.

Compared with the conventional blast furnace route, the Lingen electric steel mill produces over 75% less CO2 emissions for low-alloy steel grades. The use of green electricity will further reduce this figure significantly.
